Amesbury, MA- Elizabeth (Betty) Marie Miller, 82, passed away peacefully on December 10, surrounded by loving family. Elizabeth was born November 21, 1939 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Margaret (Barnes) and Thomas F. Shea of Belmont. She graduated from Matignon High School and the R.N. program at Mount Auburn Hospital. She later earned her B.S. in Nursing from St. Joseph’s College. Early in her career Betty enjoyed working at Mount Auburn Hospital, assisting in the first heart transplants. She married the love of her life, Peter J. Miller, on September 7, 1963. After the birth of their two daughters, Betty and Peter settled their family in Rowayton, Connecticut, where Betty worked for many years as a school nurse in the Norwalk Public School System. Betty brought her friendly nature and sunny disposition to everyone she met, making friends everywhere she went. She cared deeply for all of her patients and students, forming deep bonds of caring and compassion with all. Betty and Peter enjoyed summering with their daughters in Ogunquit, Maine, where they owned an art gallery featuring Peter’s watercolor paintings. They loved to go on adventures together, scouting out beautiful coastal scenes for Peter to paint, from Florida to Maine. Betty was an avid reader, and had a love for books and stories. She was a devoted wife and mother, making every day special for those she loved. Betty was a sage adviser and great listener to family, friends, and neighbors. She loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Betty is survived by her daughter Elizabeth L. Miller and partner Steven J. Manning of Newbury, Massachusetts; her daughter Kristen M. Miller and husband Marcus C. Lisle of Amesbury, Massachusetts; her sister Dorothy Leahy and husband Joseph Leahy; her sister Margaret Egleston and husband William Egleston; her brother John Shea and wife Frances Shea; her grandchildren, Benjamin McKinney, James McKinney, and Phoenix Merrill, and many nieces, nephews and friends.
A Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on December 17 at Sacred Heart Church, 46 Belmont St. Watertown, MA. Masks are required, and groups will be socially distanced.
