Portsmouth, NH- Carol Pocengal Theurer, 64, passed away peacefully in her home in Portsmouth, NH on October 16th with her daughter, Kate, by her side a year after being diagnosed with colorectal cancer.
Carol was born on December 2, 1959 in Yonkers, New York and grew up in Darien, Connecticut. Until August 2024, Carol worked as a passionate dental hygienist. She took immense pride in her work and the relationships she maintained with her coworkers and patients were of utmost importance to her. When Carol was not “gum gardening” as she once referred to it, she enjoyed spending time with her daughter, reading, dog-sitting, being outdoors and working out. Carol was an avid runner, completing numerous half marathons and a marathon before hanging up her sneakers. Never afraid to take on a challenge, Carol also raised three puppies for Guiding Eyes for the Blind. She was working on hiking the 48 NH 4,000 Footers and following her diagnosis tackled a 3am hike up Cadillac Mountain with her daughter to watch the sunrise.
Carol is survived by her daughter, Katherine Theurer, her father, Edward Pocengal, her sister, Cynthia Steckler, her niece, Leah Steckler, and her former husband, Scott Theurer, with whom she maintained a close friendship. She is predeceased by her brother, Edward (Ned) Pocengal (2015), her mother, Nora Ryan (2022) and her step-father, Thomas Ryan (2020).
A service may be arranged at a later date. If anyone wishes to do so, the family suggests donations in Carol’s name to Guiding Eyes for the Blind or a charity of choice.
