Portsmouth, NH – Betty Joan Day, lovingly known as Nana to her grandchildren and Great Nana or G-Nans to her great-grandchildren, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 26 th at the age of 93 in Portsmouth, NH. Born on June 23, 1930, Betty was a lifelong resident of Portsmouth and Newcastle, NH.
Having spent her childhood summers along the coasts of New Hampshire and Maine, Betty always cherished being near the ocean; multiple generations of her family had been lighthouse keepers in Jonesport, ME and Nubble Light in Cape Neddick, ME.
She deeply loved her family; many nights were spent playing cards or Yahtzee into the wee hours of the morning with her daughter, Deb, and her grandchildren will fondly remember her famous homemade fried-dough breakfast sandwiches on Sunday mornings. For many years, she cared for both her grandchildren and great-grandchildren when they were young, and in their later school years, welcomed them into her home with open arms whenever the occasional day of “hooky” was in order. There was always a pitcher of the sweetest iced tea you ever tasted ready and waiting for them in her refrigerator, and she loved to catch up on the latest Boston Celtics highlights with them any time they called.
She was predeceased by her beloved daughter, Deborah Clark, of Rye, NH; her parents, Doris Day, of Wichita, KS and Gordon Day, of Newcastle, NH; her brother, Gordon (Warren) Day, of Kittery, ME; her brother, Harold (Skip) Day, of Coweta, OK; and her sister, Virginia (Ginnie) Booth, of Wichita, KS.
She is survived by her three grandchildren; Jody Clark and husband Dan Morey, of Berwick, ME; Brad Clark and wife Sarah Clark, of Berwick, ME; and Devon Clark of Kittery, ME; and five great-grandchildren; Haedyn Clark of Berwick, ME; Justis Mattis-Clark of Sanford, ME; Camden Clark of Winthrop, MA; Shea Clark of Berwick, ME; and Maia Clark of Berwick, ME.
A private burial will be held at her family plot, overlooking the water, in Newcastle, NH.
